History and Features of the Department

Civil engineering is the mother branch among all branches and is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning, construction and maintenance of structures, or public works, as they are related to earth, water or civilization and their processes.


The department of civil engineering at K.V.G. College of engineering was established in the year of 1986 as the part of institute since from its inception. The program is approved by AICTE and obtained permanent affiliation from VTU, Belagavi. The department has been in the forefront of advanced research in civil engineering and has also been very pro-active in industrial interaction and technology development.


The civil department is known for its excellence in teaching with highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty, skilled supporting staff, well established and updated laboratories to latest technologies, excellent infra-structure and disciplined and hardworking students. The department facilitates good teaching learning environment to the students so that they can excel in their studies. The department offers undergraduate course with an intake of 120 and also post graduate programme, master's degree in construction technology with an intake of 18.


The department is consisting of 3 Professors 1 Associate Professor and 16 Asst Professors headed by Dr. Chandrashekhar A. Over the years, the department secured many ranks at university level. Students are encouraged to take up research projects and also be motivated to present papers in student seminars, paper contest and state level project exhibition etc. The best projects are financially supported by R&D cell.



All faculty members are involved in various department activities association activities R&D activities and consultancy works like soil testing, engineering material testing for various organizations like PWD, Panchayathraj engineering (PRE) PMGSY, Southern railways etc. The department also provides various services in the field of construction at different stages i.e surveying, planning, designing and quality control. Department is recognized as third party agency for the inspection of works carried out by various departments such as PWD, PRE, Town panchayath and minor irrigation in kodagu and Dakshina Kannada district.


The department also has 5 state of art laboratories with the best in class facilities for the students to carry out their laboratory activities and project works using both proprietary software. Apart from that, the department also has a centralized computer centre connected with 200 Mbps internet to meet the browsing requirement of students. The department of computer science and engineering is responsible for the maintenance of Software & Hardware of the computers in the college.


Department is led by an eminent professor and backed by 24 dedicated faculty members, the department has well qualified, experienced and committed faculty to provide quality industry tuned education to the students and most of them are members of professional bodies like ISTE, CSI.


A few of the major areas of research interest that the faculties and students propose are Artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, Web Application development, Cloud Computing, Networking, Image Processing, Database, Software Engineering and Data mining.


The department will always work in close lines with the latest trends and development of most of the renowned companies. This communication expedites the process of joint research, funded projects from the companies and provides a very good opportunity to learn the latest trends in the industry. The department also organizes technical talks by resource persons from industries in every semester. Also the students are given an opportunity to go for industrial visits, wherein they come to know the real world scenario of the companies and try to understand the work environment.


The department has several MoUs with various industries. The main purpose of these MoUs is to fulfill the gap between academics and the actual industry scheme.


The department also caters a cutting edge computational facility to the students. The department produces top-class graduates who are asked for both academia and best state of art Corporates.

To serve as a school of excellence in providing technical education with industry-orientation and to apply engineering knowledge for the current and future challenges in Civil engineering.


Mission

  • M1: Providing effective learner center courses in Civil Engineering to impact strong theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • M2:Switching over to modern methods of material testing, drafting, surveying, Engineering analysis and design in the field of Civil engineering.
  • M3:Promoting teamwork to develop research, professional and entrepreneurial skills.

Program Educational Objectives(PEO) of the Department

  • PEO 1: To provide quality education and knowledge in contemporary science and technology to meet the challenges in the field of Civil Engineering and to serve the society.
  • PEO 2: To impart the knowledge of analysis and design using the codes of practice and software packages.
  • PEO 3: To inculcate the sense of ethics, morality, creativity, leadership, professionalism, self confidence and independent thinking.
  • PEO 4: To motivate the students to take up higher studies and innovative research projects.


Program Outcome (PO)

  • PO1: Engineering Knowledge: To apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems
  • PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex Engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • PO3: Design/Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate considerations for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations
  • PO4:Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • PO5: Modern Tool Usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • PO6: The Engineer and Society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • PO7: Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • PO8: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • PO9: Individual and Team Work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member of leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • PO10: Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  • PO11: Project Management and Finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments
  • PO12: Life-long Learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life- long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES (PEO’S)

  • PSO1 : PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS Demonstrate sound knowledge in analysis, design, laboratory investigations, survey, map and plan layouts for buildings, structures and alignments for canals and roads aspects of civil engineering infrastructures.
  • PSO2 : PROFESSIONAL SKILLS Specify, design, supervise, test and evaluate foundations and superstructures for residences, public buildings, industries, irrigation structures, hydraulic machines and surge systems, powerhouses, highways, railways, airways, docks and harbors.
  • PSO3 : The ability to analyze the effects of natural calamities like earthquakes, landslides etc. including disaster management and to design stable structures for relevant stress resultants
